Better Than Nat Geo – Animal Pictures from 1146-1223 AD

Ed, I had such fun looking at the pictures in this old Latin book. Gerald of Wales’s Topographica Hibernica (Topography of Ireland). 1146 -1223 AD . It was amazing to see the animals like the unicorn, griffon, MERMAID, that were literally in the manuals commissioned by the rich people of the time. This kind of book used to be used to study a place to understand it for various reasons from diplomacy to military to just science. The details show that the person reproduced what was seen as an eye witness.

It’s so sweet to see drawings of animals that show how we living beings all have the same heart and feelings whichever species we are.

UNICORN WITH LOONNNNNGGG HORN

I’ve left out the upsetting pictures of men hunting animals, Ed, just showing you this one pic of them castrating dogs. It’s so sad, Ed. I feel it’s better to kill them than do this. It’s possible they’re shown actually harvesting the testicles, because the man is holding on to them instead of casting them aside. It makes you wonder at how the thugs insist on castration of dogs these days. Ok that’s all sad stuff in this post.

The three cats are offering someone a rat they’ve caught.

YAY DONKEY!!!

PIGGIES!!! The mom’s face is just how the mommies look when someone comes around taking pics when they’re feeding the brats.

It’s a hybrid between a lion and an eagle, Ed, catching a cow so we see the size. I think these were called Griffons and they’re on buildings all over the world.

It’s a lion scaring all the herbivores with his roar.

It’s a man using a spell to keep a snake away from him.

It’s a big snake, who swallows small snakes, who live inside him quite happily, and pop their heads out his back for air.

The mixed species dude is the king and everyone got to listen to him.

This valiant dragon/snake is trying to python this elephant, who’s like, “Dude, this isn’t going to work.”

The Mama bird is like, “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, RORY?” The dad is obviously guilty.

Yay it’s a ROOSTER!

Yay it’s a peacock!!

The birds are sad because the fox ate their family member.

Yay, it’s a crow!!

This one’s such fun, Ed. The mermaid is asking the men in the boat about the land animal that’s carved on the head of the boat. She’s not seen one ever. It’s possible she’s offering them a fish for information.

Yay two cute, sweet, wise owls.

This is the dude everyone goes to for wisdom and insight.

PARROTS!!!

The leader dude has a rock or crystal in his claw that’s making the others listen to him.

It’s turtles enjoying seaweed.

It’s water snakes swimming in the weeds underwater.

It’s so cute, Ed, how the artist shows their awareness that he’s drawing them.

From such a long time ago, Ed, the love is still reaching.
